Dear Senior Infants,

Well done on finishing Senior Infants!!! We have enjoyed every minute of teaching you over the past year. You have been amazing.

 It has been a very different and strange end to your school year. It wasn’t the year we ever thought would happen but we made the most of it. We did it together.

We haven’t seen you in 15 weeks and this has been the hardest part. We miss teaching you, listening to your stories, playing games and having fun. We are so proud of all the hard work you have been doing at home with your parents. It has not been easy but you always tried your best even when times were hard and the sun was shining.

To all your parents, the biggest thank you for all your support throughout the year. The support, communication and thanks we have received from you over lockdown is really appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you all when we return to school. Have a great summer!😊

This week we will not be posting any academic work to be completed. Children have been working so hard since we closed so this week we would like you to enjoy our virtual sports activities. Have fun and enjoy your last week of school.

MONDAY 4TH MAY

Good Morning,

We hope everybody has enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend. It has been nearly 8 weeks since we had to close our school for the health and safety of students and staff. The past few weeks have been extremely difficult for everybody. Thank you all for your continued support and we appreciate the hard work you have been putting in at home.

Last Friday, we heard the upsetting news that we will not be returning to school until September. We were so disappointed as our only wish was for us all to return to school and see the boys and girls again. We did not want our school year to finish like this.

As always, we will continue to work with you over the next few months to finish the school year on a positive note.

  1. The new book we started to read during the school closure is called ARE YOU KITTY?. This book is available as an ebook on folens online and can be accessed. There are no new words introduced throughout this book. Continue to read this book for the remainder of the week.

Folens online can be accessed for free where you can look at the class readers we have covered to date (THE BIG HORSE and WHAT A MESS!) Please revise these books.

The Irish programme we use in class is called Bua na Cainte. Edco are providing access to their online interactive programme for parents and children to use at home. The themes we have covered to date – Mé Féin, An Scoil, Bia, Caitheamh Aimsire, Éadaí and Sa Bhaile. Children can revise these themes, lessons, songs and games.

Keep Active & Learn

Children can practice spelling their names, names of siblings, names of friends and a range of different words while also keeping active.

I hope this finds you safe and well. First and foremost, we miss you loads and look forward to the day where we can return to school and get back to normal. I know it must be very hard to stay at home and not meet up with all of your friends that you have made here in school, but we have to try our best!!

Below is a suggestion of some activities that the children could be completing over the next few weeks. These are just suggestions; we are very conscious of the fact that everyone’s daily life has been disrupted and we in no way want to add to these pressures. However, the continuation of the children’s learning is very important to us, so we ask that for the most part, we engage collaboratively and collectively to ensure we achieve this.

I would love to see you continue to write your news everyday and tell me all that you are doing. Start a new copy to write in. Focus on neat writing, don’t break your words and make sure your letters are facing the correct way.

Jolly Phonics

We have completed all sounds in our Jolly Phonics. The free jolly phonics app can be downloaded to help with revision. Letter names, sounds, songs and actions can all be revised in a fun and meaningful way. YouTube songs – ‘What do the Letters Say’ and Jolly Phonic sound songs are also available online. Digraphs can be a focus (e.g ai, oa, ie, er) and these sounds are always the most difficult for children.

Tricky Words 1-30

Tricky words – Revise all tricky words completed 1-30. See box below. These words can be read aloud, put into sentences and practiced as spellings.

Twinkl – this website is a fantastic resource for teachers and parents to use. They are offering parents one month free membership while children are at home. Please see http://www.twinkl.ie/offer and enter the code IRLTWINKLHELPS.

 

Reading

Folens online can be accessed for free where you can look at the class readers we have covered to date (THE BIG HORSE and WHAT A MESS!) Please revise these books.

We would like children to continue reading each day. The new book we would like children to read during the school closure is called ARE YOU KITTY?. This book is available as an ebook on folens online. There are no new words introduced throughout this book.

Online Stories – Getepic.com. Click login and say you do not have an account. Join free for 30 days as a family. Here you can create your account. Click learning to read and choose books for age 4-6 years. There is lots to choose from.

Oxfordowl.co.uk – this is a similar site to getepic.com and also has lots of reading resources online. As we can’t work on our shared reading these online stories might be a useful resource.

 

Maths

Topmarks.co.uk- Type in search box- shapes, counting, patterns, number for all different types of games.

NRICH.com https://nrich.maths.org/9084 here are more maths activities you can do with your child. A lot of them are quite practical. Stay within age appropriate games.

Practice number formation from 0-20, on paper/whiteboards etc. Children can also draw items to represent numbers (10 apples for the number 10/5 sweets for the number 5)

We have completed number stories to 9. Please revise all these number stories. Children may need resources to aid counting (cubes/counters etc).

EXAMPLE: STORY OF 6

WEIGHT – Experiment weighing various objects at home. Encourage appropriate language e.g. heavy/light/heavier/lighter/heaviest/lightest.

SHAPES – Observe and recognise 2D and 3D shapes in environment. Maths is everywhere!!

TWINKL – twinkl has a number of fun and meaningful resources to aid children’s learning. These activities can be printed for children to complete. (Colour by number etc)
