Boys & Girls it’s the day of the Summer Holidays! I am so sad I didn’t get to teach you all for longer, you are an amazing class and I really enjoyed my time with you. I am delighted with how hard you have all worked during these crazy times and you should be so proud of yourselves to have managed so well. I want you all to say a big thank you to Mom, Dad or whoever helped you with working from home the past few weeks. It hasn’t been easy but WOW you have done some really impressive work.

I was so proud to have you all in my class 🙂 We have lot’s of great memories from our time together, you never failed to make me laugh and we had so many achievements too! (Long multiplication for one! Haha)

I loved seeing your pictures, work and reading your emails. I hope you all have a lovely summer. Keep in touch with your school friends, help at home and would I be pushing it by saying try to do a little reading! (I know lot’s of you will gladly) Stay safe and happy, and I wish you all the best in 5th class 🙂

Good morning,

It is almost the end of the school year. Well done for all of your hard work since the school closed way back in March. I have really enjoyed seeing photos of you and your work and I hope the feedback was helpful. Some parents have emailed to ask if they can hand in the copy with their child’s work. If you would like to do this, you could put my name on it and hand it in when you return your book rental books. I can return it to your child when we go back to school in August. There is no obligation to do this, it is totally up to you.  There will be a reduced amount of work this week. If we were in school, we would be spending plenty of time outside, visiting the field for PE, doing some summer art etc. so you might enjoy doing that at home this week. This week we’re looking at the topic of time again. This is a subject area that children can find tricky. You could ask your child to look up bus, train and TV timetables for specific information. They could look at expiry dates on food and work out how many days are left or calculate the number of days between 2 people’s birthdays.

Planet Maths page 143-147 you might like to choose something from each page each day or maybe set a time and see how much you can get through as the week goes on if you are feeling confident.

Dear Parents,

Due to the bank holiday on Monday and the planned school closure on Tuesday, I will give a reduced amount of work this week. As usual I would urge you to find a system that works for your family situation. For some, that might mean stretching the work over five days and sticking to an established routine. Others might wish to take a break from schoolwork on Monday and Tuesday as planned.

English:

• This year we studied Persuasive Writing and Explanatory Writing. The children also created their own pieces of writing from each of these genres. Our next genre is Procedural Writing, try out p44 in Exercise your English

Gaeilge:

• We will continue with the theme ‘An Aimsir’ this week. Children should try to give a short weather report to the family each day using the vocabulary sheet from last week. You could ask them: Cén sort aimsir atá ann inniu? (What is the weather like today?).
• They can practice their Irish reading daily using the content on page 125 of Abair Liom. This Comhrá is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website. In school the children like to act out these conversations. Maybe they could try this at home with family members. Children can finish activities that they may not have had a chance to complete on p125 and 126.
• Try write out ‘Bris’ in the Aimsir Láithreach and use it in sentences also. You will find a page to help you in Abair Liom p182 and the children have notes in their Gaeilge hardback.

Maths:

On shorter weeks it’s a good idea to revise tables, especially division tables covered to date try focus on whichever tables you find trickiest. Daily 10 is a great way to practice).

This week we are going to begin to learn about Maori people! I think you will enjoy this chapter. I know we have a lot of rugby fans in our class, so you may know more about Maori people than you think! Begin with a brainstorm, what do I already know, what would I like to know, even try to predict what you think the book will teach us!

• Read the introduction page 104 in unlocking SESE and discuss with someone if you can 🙂
• Then move onto p105 and test yourself so far with the ‘Checkpoint’ 
• Take notes of the things you have learned so far in your SESE hardbacks.

You could print the template and colour in and design it or even just copy it on a plain sheet! Have fun with the colours and designs

RTE HOME SCHOOL HUB 4th Class outline

• Monday- Art. Today we learn to make our own prints with a technique called marbling using items we can find in our own homes
• Tuesday- Geography. Today we learn all about the 4 provinces Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Connaught
• Wednesday- English. In English today we learn about autobiography. We learn how to write for a purpose and with a particular audience in mind (Informational-biography) We Identify key information that must be included in a biography/autobiography. 
• Thursday-PE. Today we learn to appreciate that despite the current restrictions physical activity is still possible and encouraged. We do some circuit training and remember the importance of stretching
• Friday-English. Today we learn that English has different genres and that poetry can have different rules depending on the type of poem you are writing.
• We are R4 (4th Class!) So you will be looking at R3-R6 🙂
• TG4 also have a school program at 10am daily

Dear Parents,

As we are continuing to follow the school calendar, we will not be posting on the website for the two weeks of the Easter holidays. If you would like to continue with the structure of doing school work daily, we highly recommend RTE Home School Hub. We’ve been watching this week and we all agree that this programme is very educational. It is curriculum based and supported by the Department of Education. We think that the children from 3^rd and 4^th class would enjoy it. It is on every day at 11am and might give you a break for an hour!

We will be checking our emails from time to time over the fortnight so if you need any help, support or advice during this time feel free to contact us via the email addresses we have already posted. We would like to wish you and your children a very Happy Easter and we will be posting on the website again on Monday, 20^th of April.

Hi Boys and Girls 🙂 How is everyone coping? I have been getting some lovely emails with all the fun things you are doing to keep busy! I even got a few ideas that I will try myself.

Dear Parents,

I will be putting together suggestions of work for your children to complete at home, I am mindful of the challenges people may be facing in the coming weeks and do not want to add stress or pressure for you or your children. I would hope that children would engage in the process independently for the most part using a spare copy.

Please appreciate that many of the activities that children engage in at home are highly beneficial for their learning. Playing with Lego and other construction toys, playing outside, practicing their sports, pretend play, board games, reading, painting, drawing, playdoh, helping with household chores, practicing musical instruments are all educational and worthwhile activities. 

Understand that these are just suggestions- it is important that you choose an approach that works for your family. You can contact me on a.duggan@upperglanmirens.ie during the school closure if you have any questions or if you would like to share pictures of the work your child has done.

All work will be done in a spare copy or in the books that we always write in (Master your Maths or Fuaimeanna agus Focail). Keep your copy neat, use red pen, ruler, cursive writing in blue pen, date and title all work.
