Good morning to you all,
This is our final week of school work as we will be on our summer holidays on Friday. Each day I will post sporting activities based on different themes.
I am delighted to say that Robert Horgan is the winner of the art competition from our class. Well done Robert. Your Lego creation must have taken a lot of time 😊 Your prize will be waiting for you at the school this morning.
I would also like to share some of the other entries I received.
Well done to everybody who participated in this competition. I loved seeing the pictures of your works of art.
SPORTS ACTIVITY FOR MONDAY 22/6
Today was the planned day for our annual school 5k run. Your challenge is to go for a long walk or run. Maybe you or your parent could use a phone or a fitbit to measure your walk or run. How many kilometres did you manage? You can share pictures of your walk or run on the school Facebook page or you can email them to me at n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie
Take care,
Ms Tutundjian

Good morning,
It is almost the end of the school year. Well done for all of your hard work since the school closed way back in March. I have really enjoyed seeing photos of you and your work and I hope the feedback was helpful. Some parents have emailed to ask if they can hand in the copy with their child’s work. If you would like to do this, you could put my name on it and hand it in when you return your book rental books. I can return it to your child when we go back to school in August. There is no obligation to do this, it is totally up to you. There will be a reduced amount of work this week. If we were in school, we would be spending plenty of time outside, visiting the field for PE, doing some summer art etc. so you might enjoy doing that at home this week. I am always very happy to hear from you and am still contactable at n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie if you would like to get in touch. A very big happy birthday to Sadie this week too, I hope you enjoy your day 🙂
Kind Regards,
Nicole Tutundjian

Again, this week I will give the usual suggestions of some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas. This will be followed by a suggested chapter from the religion textbook and an art activity. Thank you for your emails this week. I enjoyed the contact with you this week and . I also had several emails directly from the children and this was especially welcome. Please encourage your child to email me. They do not have to post their work but just to hear how they are doing is nice and the contact might help them to stay motivated for the next few weeks and I will be sure to reply. As you know my email address is n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie.

Dear Parents,
Due to the bank holiday on Monday and the planned school closure on Tuesday, I will give a reduced amount of work this week. As usual I would urge you to find a system that works for your family situation. For some, that might mean stretching the work over five days and sticking to an established routine. Others might wish to take a break from schoolwork on Monday and Tuesday as planned.
English:
- This year we studied Persuasive Writing and Explanatory Writing. The children also created their own pieces of writing from each of these genres. Our next genre is Procedural Writing.
3rd Class can complete p32 in Exercise Your English and also p72 A.
4th Class can complete p44.
Gaeilge:
- If you would like a PDF version of the vocab for An Aimsir please email me and I can send it to you.
- We will continue with the theme ‘An Aimsir’ this week. Children should try to give a short weather report to the family each day using the vocabulary sheet from last week. You could ask them: Cén sort aimsir atá ann inniu? (What is the weather like today?).
- They can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on page 125 of Abair Liom. This Comhrá is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website. In school the children like to act out these conversations. Maybe they could try this at home with family members. Children can finish activities that they may not have had a chance to complete on p125 and 126.
- Third class can write out the verb Bris in the Aimsir Chaite and write some sentences using the verb if they can. Fourth class can write it out in the Aimsir Láithreach and use it in sentences also. You will find a page to help you in Abair Liom p182 and the children have notes in their Gaeilge hardback.
Maths:
On shorter weeks it’s a good idea to revise tables, especially division tables covered to date can be practised this week (Third class can focus on ÷10, ÷5, ÷2, ÷4 and Fourth class can focus on whichever tables they find trickiest. Daily 10 is a great way to practice).
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
We also play Countdown in class and it’s a great way to revise all of the operations. The children were getting very good at it so if you would like to play you can find it on this link
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=countdowntimerv3
There are some Mental Maths Revision activities on pages 172 and 173 of Planet Maths. These could be completed this week.
SESE: We are going to start learning about Germany so brainstorm everything you know about Germany on a page in your copy and next week we’ll read more about it.
Religion: This week the children could take a look at pages 70-72 in Grow in Love.
Try to get outside every day even if the sun isn’t shining and keep up all of the other activities you are engaging in. I am delighted to hear about some of things you’re getting up to – gardening, baking, cooking, painting and building! You can contact me at n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie if you need any further suggestions or if you would like to share any of your child’s work.
The news that we will not be back together in the classroom this school year is so disappointing but remember that you are all still classmates and I am still your proud teacher 🙂
Kind Regards,
Ms Tutundjian

English
I am having trouble with the picture of our spellings for this week. I will continue to try but in the meantime, 3rd class can see this weeks spellings on Ms Flanagan’s page and 4th class will find theirs on Ms Duggan’s.
We are moving onto Unit 26 on page 106.
3rd Class: Two games to make and play. Read the text and complete activities A, B, C, D & G
4th Class: Abebe Bikila. Read the text and complete activities A, B, C, D & F
Complete the next page of Write On.
Maths This week we will start Weight. You will find this topic on p. 114 in Planet Maths. Children could begin by finding products at home eg. flour, sugar, coffee that have the amount indicated in grams or kilograms on the packaging. Children could look for weighing scales around the house and identify what they are used to weigh. When adding and subtracting grams and kilograms, remind your child to put the grams under the grams and the kilograms under the kilograms and to give each number its own box in their Maths copy to keep their work neat and clear (there is an example in PM on p.115). Children can complete a selection of the activities from p. 114- p. 118.
- There are three online games for this topic on the folens website.
*RIDDLE: Which is heavier, 1kg of feathers or 1kg of coal?
- If you are doing any baking this week maybe you could include your child and let them help to weigh the ingredients.
- We will start ÷4 tables. Children can use Hit the Button and the activities on p. 37 and p. 38 in their Table Toppers book to learn and practise these
- SESE: Continue reading about the Maori in Unlocking SESE and take notes of VIPs in your SESE hardback. If there is a particular area of the Maori people that interests you, do some more research on it. For example, Maori art, education, politics, festivals and religion or leisure activities.

Monday 20/04/2020
Good morning everyone 🙂 I hope you had a lovely Easter. Here are some suggestions for activities you can do this week. Remember, these are suggestions but try your best to work through them. Jessica, I hope you have a lovely birthday on Thursday, I’m sure you’ll make the most of it.
Gaeilge: This will be the last week of the theme of An Teilifís. Again, the children should be very familiar with the vocabulary for this theme by now and are usually great at practicing it so I encourage them to continue this daily.
There are activities in Abair Liom that the children can work through on pages 116-121. If you need any further guidance on how to complete these please email me and I can help.
Parents can create an account with Folens and there are resources to support the learning . https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/AbairLiom/3rd_class/resources/Passage/AL_3C_ACT_PAS_CH14_002/index.htm
In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on toAonad 24 and complete the activities as they normally would. The meanings of the spellings for 3rd class are: line, pegs, shirt, tie, jumper, skirt, tie, socks, bird, the sun, the wind. 4th class children can use their dictionaries to look up the meanings.
English
Reading Zone Unit 26. 3rd Class will read Dad, Sam and Blacky, 4th Class have A Baker’s Dozen. Read the story and complete activities A-G p104-105.
Children can do the next page of their Write On.
Maths. We would have moved onto capacity in this week. This is often a topic children enjoy as there is lots of hand-on activities that you can do. You will find this topic on p. 157 in Planet Maths. Children could begin by finding products at home eg. milk, juice that have the amount indicated in litres or millilitres on the packaging. If you have a measuring jug at home, the children could explore capacity using these- estimating and filling other containers. When adding and subtracting litres and millilitres, remind your child to put the units under the units, the tens under the tens etc. and to give each number its own box in their maths copy to keep their work neat and clear.
3rd class will start ÷2 tables. Children can use Hit the Button and the activities on p. 34 and p. 35 in their Table Toppers book to learn and practise these. 4th Class should be revising all tables now. Playing games like Daily 10 is a great way to do this and really improves their speed with tables.
Religion
Grow in Love – pages 64-66.
History
This week we are going to begin to learn about Maori people! I think you will enjoy this chapter. Begin with a brainstorm, what do I already know, what would I like to know, even try to predict what you think the book will teach us!
- Read the introduction page 104 in unlocking SESE and discuss with someone if you can 🙂
- Then move onto p105 and test yourself so far with the ‘Checkpoint’
- Take notes of the things you have learned so far in your SESE hardbacks.
Art
Try to create some Maori Masks, you can see an example here http://www.craftsforkids.com/projects/900/904_1.htm
You could print the template and colour in and design it or even just copy it on a plain sheet! Have fun with the colours and designs

Dear Parents,
As we are continuing to follow the school calendar, we will not be posting on the website for the two weeks of the Easter holidays. If you would like to continue with the structure of doing school work daily, we highly recommend RTE Home School Hub. We’ve been watching this week and we all agree that this programme is very educational. It is curriculum based and supported by the Department of Education. We think that the children from 3rd and 4th class would enjoy it. It is on every day at 11am and might give you a break for an hour!
We will be checking our emails from time to time over the fortnight so if you need any help, support or advice during this time feel free to contact us via the email addresses we have already posted. We would like to wish you and your children a very Happy Easter. We sincerely hope that we’ll be back together in the classroom after the holidays but if not we will be posting on the website again on Monday, 20th of April.
Kind Regards,
Ms Flanagan, Ms Duggan and Ms Tutundjian
Monday 30/03/2020
Good morning everyone,
First off, I would like to wish Lily a happy birthday for yesterday and Ethan a happy birthday today! It will be one to remember!
This week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas again and I have a couple of other ideas from the other subject areas also.
Gaeilge: We will stay with the theme of An Teilifís again this week. Again, the vocabulary for this theme is in the hardback copies, maybe at this stage the children would be able to use some of the phrases without using their copies. They can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on page 114 of Abair Liom, maybe concentrating on one paragraph per day. Parents can create an account with Folens and this story is read aloud in the resources section of the folens website. https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/AbairLiom/3rd_class/resources/Passage/AL_3C_ACT_PAS_CH14_002/index.htm
Written activities on p. 118 can also be completed. In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on toAonad 23 and complete the activities as they normally would. The meanings of the spellings for 3rd class are: chalk, cap, coffee, money, milk, barmbrack, to get, to open, opened, he threw, she lost. 4th class children can use their dictionaries to look up the meanings.
Maths: This week you can revise. I suggest revising tables using the Daily 10 game. Children can move on to Week 24 in their Master Your Maths workbook. If they are finding certain areas difficult in MYM, you could use the Planet Maths textbook and Folens online resources to go back over these. Please find the answers for MYM below.
English: The children can move on to Unit 25 in Reading Zone and complete the activities on pages 104-105. Children could complete the next page in Write On.
SESE: If your child is working on their SESE project I would suggest adding a section headed Sources where they can list the websites or books where they found their information and also a section for My Own Ideas where children can write a few lines explaining what they liked or found interesting about their topic, maybe why they chose it or what new or unexpected information they learned. I recommend the Scoilnet website for researching SESE topics. The World Book website is another valuable resource which can be accessed for free through Scoilnet.
Literacy: On Friday Ms Flanagan posted the on the school Facebook page on behalf of the Book Club. Some of the fifth-class girls had chosen Cookie by Jacqueline Wilson as our next book. If you are a library member, the book can be downloaded to any device using the BorrowBox app. It can also be purchased from bookdepository.com or easons.com. Alternatively, you could sign up to audible.co.uk for a 30-day free trial and download it for free as an audio book. The book was chosen by some of the girls from 5th class so if you think your child might find it difficult you could read it to them or download it as an audiobook. Reading to your child allows them to concentrate on understanding the story rather than the mechanics of decoding words. It also allows them to access material that they might enjoy but might be a little advanced for their reading ability. I highly recommend reading aloud to your child as often as possible.
If you received the post cards from An Post in your letterboxes this week, it would be a nice idea to write one and post it to someone to let them know you’re thinking of them!
Art: We have followed some guided drawing lessons in school this year. This is an Easter themed lesson if any of the children would like to do some art https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNKRfEQoE0E. I’d love to see the finished products!
Religion: Read and discuss Grow in Love pgs58-63

Monday March 23rd 2020
Good morning everybody,
I hope you are well and in good health and spirits. This week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas and an outdoor activity. You can look back at last week’s post for suggestions in the other subject areas and I would again encourage children to continue to set learning goals at the beginning of each day and reflect on their learning in the evening. The suggested activities can be completed throughout the week, at your own pace. If you would like to send me pictures of completed work, please send them to n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie
Irish: An Teilifís is our theme again for this week. It would be great if the children could use some of the vocabulary from their hardback copies for this theme in their daily lives as they would during comhrá time in class. They can practise their reading using the content on page 114 of Abair Liom. Written activities A – D on pages 115 and 116 can also be completed. In Fuaimeanna & Focail children can revise the spellings from aonad 22 this week. They can also go back through the book and complete any activities they have missed due to absence.
If children need any help with translations or further explanation on how to complete the written activities please email me.
Maths: We were hoping to teach the topic ‘Area’ during Station Teaching with 3rd Class this week. 4th Class would also have moved onto this topic.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/cfe-n-150-introduction-to-area-powerpoint
This power point presentation would be a good way of introducing the topic and the children can complete activities on pages 138-142 of Planet Maths if you wish. There are some suggestions for concrete activities in the textbook also and you will find two online activities at the following link.
https://www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/planet-maths3/resources/
The children can move on to ÷5 tables this week. They can complete the activities on p. 32 and p. 33 of their Table Toppers workbook.
English: The children can move on to Unit 24 in Reading Zone and complete the activities on pages 99-100. Find a link to a power point about adjectives below, this would be a nice way to introduce the written activity E on page 100.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t2-e-4332-powerful-adjectives-powerpoint
SESE: As we are working on the theme of Biodiversity in Green Schools, I thought I would link to an article about National Tree Week which takes place this week. The article includes tips on how to identify different types of trees and mentions a free app to help with tree identification that is available from the British Wildlife Trust.
The publishers CJ Fallon and Folens are offering access to their resources for free during the school closure so if your child was absent or went home early when the closure was announced you can access all the books and workbooks online. I would also like to remind you again that the above are suggestions and it is up to you to find a way of learning that works for your family situation. I would encourage you to have a look at the pages of the other teachers, including SEN teachers, as there are some lovely ideas and resources there too that might suit your child. I am contactable at n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie should you have any questions or if you want to share your child’s work. I hope everyone is doing well and I sincerely look forward to seeing the children back in class soon.
Kind Regards,
Nicole Tutundjian
Dear Parents,
Here at Scoil Naomh Micheál we believe that learning is a social pursuit best achieved when people are engaging with each other and working and playing together. As this will not be possible in a school setting in the coming weeks, we are encouraging the children to think about how they can learn independently or with their families.
I suggest that each child starts a new copy for this time. They could call it their Independent Learning Copy. We have been talking a lot about Learning Goals and Learning Strategies this year. If possible, each day your child should set some learning goals and record them in the copy. These goals might include some of the textbook/ workbook work that I have suggested or other activities as in the example below.
Your child can also write a short reflection each day to look back on their goals and learning. I am mindful of the challenges that may occur for families in the coming weeks and do not want to cause any extra stress or pressures for you and your children. I would hope that children could engage in this process independently for the most part.
I also ask you to appreciate that many of the activities that children engage in at home are highly beneficial for their learning. Playing with Lego and other construction toys, playing outside, practicing their sports, pretend play, board games, reading, painting, drawing, playdoh, helping with household chores, practicing musical instruments are all educational and worthwhile activities.
I will be suggesting work that the children can complete from their schoolbooks. Please understand that these are just suggestions- it is important that you choose an approach that works for your family. You can contact me on n.tutundjian@upperglanmirens.ie during the school closure if you have any questions.
I hope that the coming weeks go as smoothly as possible and look forward to a happy and healthy return to school soon. Stay Safe.
Kind Regards,
Nicole Tutundjian
Suggested school work and activities
Gaeilge
- Our planned theme for the next few weeks is An teilifís. Written activities can be found in Abair Liom lch 106-121. Vocabulary for oral work can be found in the Irish hardback copy. The Seachtain na Gaeilge resources that Mr. O’Connell forwarded to you can also be used and explored.
English
- Reading their own books at home would be very beneficial and children could keep a record of the books they have read and what they thought of them in their copy if they wish.
- If you are a library member and have a digital device, BorrowBox is an app that allows you to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your library for free.
- I know a number of children in the class like to write stories or make books. This should be encouraged. Spelling or grammar are not priorities here.
Maths
- The plan was to continue with ÷. Children may have a look at the upcoming tables in their tables books if they wish but I would suggest that they use this time to revise and improve their speed and accuracy. They love the Hit the Button game which can be found online or downloaded as an app. The Daily 10 is also a great game. Both can be found on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/
- We were doing Maths Stations in 3rd class this month. Children can continue with 3D shapes this week and complete p.154 A 1+2. 4th Class children can continue with the division chapter – Planet Maths p108 C, D & E
- Due to the Station Teaching, children have been doing sections of their Master Your Maths books independently. Children can complete up to Week 23, including the tests if they wish and if not already completed.
- Time is an important topic which some of the children have found difficult. See Planet Maths 3rd and 4th p.18- 22 for guidance but referring to analogue and digital clocks at home would be very helpful. There are also games on the Top Marks website which will help.
Religion
- Children are welcome to read ahead in their Grow in Love textbook or look back over previous chapters and I would encourage daily prayer and/ or religious stories if this is something that suits your family.
SESE (Geography, History, Science)
- Usually in May I assign a project in this area, this might be a suitable task for children to do while home from school. Children can complete a project in any of the three subject areas on a topic of their own choosing. They can look through Unlocking SESE for ideas but are not restricted to these topics. These projects can be researched and presented in any way that works for you.
PE/ Drama/ Art/ Music/SPHE
- Play, play and more play! This is a good opportunity for children to have time for free, unstructured, undirected play. Play can incorporate outside activities such as ball games, chasing games, trampolines. It can also involve dressing up and playing imaginative games. In school the children love getting an idea or theme and coming up with a drama based on this. Creative play such as drawing, painting, junk art is also very worthwhile. With structured activities cancelled in a lot of cases, make the most of this opportunity for more free play.
- Go Noodle is a great, free resource for indoor physical activity. We use it on rainy days in school so the children are familiar with it. It is easy to create an account.
- If you search for Cosmic Yoga on YouTube you will find yoga and meditation videos of varying lengths that the children are familiar with.
- The Just Dance videos on You Tube are guided dance videos that the children enjoy.
Twinkl.ie is another useful resource. They are offering free membership for parents and teachers during this time and their content covers all curricular areas.
Again, I would like to stress that it is hoped that the above suggestions are helpful and do not put further stress on you and your family. None of the above is required. As the primary educator of your child it is important that you choose a system that works for you over the coming days.
