26/6/’20
Good morning. Today is the last day of the school year. Normally you would all be in school wearing your summer clothes and we would be playing and having some fun before saying goodbye for the summer holidays. Make sure you have some fun today. The theme for the sports week is ‘Games’ today. You will see some examples on the website and I am sure you will come up with some of your own ideas too. You could have races with your family or friends. Try the sack race like I did or the potato and spoon race (it’s a less messy than the egg and spoon race!). It was a short and very strange year but I have lovely memories of the time we were together in Third Class. I have spoken to Joan a lot during the closure and I know that she missed you all too and wishes you all the best for the summer holidays. I will post some pictures from your time in school below. Thank you for all of your hard work while the school was closed. I loved receiving your emails and I know from talking to your parents that it was difficult at times but I also know that you all did your best. Give your Mum and Dad and anybody else who helped and supported you with your school work at home a big hug today and thank them. I am looking forward to seeing you all back at school at the end of August. Have a great summer.
From, Ms. Flanagan
SPORTS ACTIVITIES FOR THURSDAY 25/6
Today we are focussing on Landing and Skipping. I know some of you loved to skip during yard time this year and that you know plenty of games so get the skipping ropes out today and show some of your skills to your family. How many skips can you do without stopping. Ask somebody to time you. How many skips can you do in a minute? Can you skip backwards or on one leg?
When we did Athletics in PE this year we practised different ways to jump and land. Can you remember them? We started by jumping from 2 feet and landing on 2 feet. Then we we took 3 steps and jumped from one foot, landing on one foot. Finally we did the long jump. We ran towards the starting point, took three big steps and jumped from one foot, landing on two. Maybe you could ask someone to measure your jump like we did in school. Here is an instructional video that might help.
Send me pictures of your attempts or email me to share your best result. Check out the home page of the website today for more ideas and activities. Have a great day!
SPORTS ACTIVITIES FOR WEDNESDAY 24/6
Good morning. Today’s themes for the sports week are Throwing and Balancing. Have a look at the home page of the website for some ideas. Below are two more activities you can try. If you come up with your own games and ideas, send me a picture or a video. You can also save these activities for a day when the weather is a bit better. Enjoy!
SPORTS ACTIVITY FOR TUESDAY 23/6
I hope you enjoyed your walk or run yesterday despite the showers.
Today’s theme for our Virtual Sports Week is ‘Kicking’. We have posted some ideas on the home page of the website. Give them a try. If you share pictures of your activities with me I will post them on the website tomorrow. have a good day!
22/6/’20
Good morning to you all,
This is our final week of school work as we will be on our summer holidays on Friday. Each day we will post sporting activities based on different themes. I would like to wish Lola a very happy birthday for yesterday. I hope you had a great day Lola and that you enjoyed sharing the celebrations with your Dad! Amy celebrates her birthday next week. Happy birthday Amy, that will be a nice start to the summer holidays. Emer and Liam both celebrate their birthdays in August so happy birthday in advance to both of them also!
I am delighted to announce that Kate Cashman is the winner of the art competition from Ms. Flanagan’s class. Well done Kate. Your Lego creation was just lovely. See a picture of Kate’s entry below. She depicted herself and her pal Keelin keeping apart in their own homes while also staying and working together via FaceTime. Kate, your prize will be waiting for you at the school this morning.
I would also like to share some of the other entries I received.
Well done to everybody who participated in this competition. We loved seeing the pictures of your works of art.
SPORTS ACTIVITY FOR MONDAY 22/6
Today was the planned day for our annual school 5k run. Your challenge is to go for a long walk or run. Maybe you or your parent could use a phone or a fitbit to measure your walk or run. How many kilometres did you manage? You can share pictures of your walk or run on the school Facebook page or you can email them to me at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie
15/6/’20
Good morning,
It is almost the end of the school year. Well done for all of your hard work since the school closed way back in March. I have really enjoyed seeing photos of you and your work and I hope the feedback was helpful. Some parents have emailed to ask if they can hand in the copy with their child’s work. If you would like to do this, you could put my name on it and hand it in when you return your book rental books. I can return it to your child when we go back to school in August. There is no obligation to do this, it is totally up to you. There will be a reduced amount of work this week. If we were in school, we would be spending plenty of time outside, visiting the field for PE, doing some summer art etc. so you might enjoy doing that at home this week. I am always very happy to hear from you and am still contactable at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie if you would like to get in touch.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan
Irish:
- We will continue the theme of Caitheamh Aimsire (Pastimes/ Hobbies) this week. The vocabulary sheet for this theme below can be downloaded from the Folens website. If you have access to a printer this sheet could be stuck into your child’s Irish hardback copy. If not, your child could write some more of the useful phrases directly into their hardback copy.
- Children can read the comhrá on page 143 of Abair Liom daily maybe acting it out with someone at home.
- Children can complete the activities on p. 144 and 145. The verbs on p. 145 are more of the ‘briathra neamhrialta’ which do not follow the rules. A full list of these verbs can be found on p. 184 of Abair Liom.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail children can move on to Unit 28 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths:
- This week we will move on to ÷9 tables. They can complete the activities on p. 46 and p. 47 of their Table Toppers workbook, using the Hit the Button game to practise further.

- We will read chapters 17, 18 and 19. Next week the children can finish the book and maybe watch the film. It is available on Netflix. Maybe your child could talk to a friend from the class on the phone or on Facetime or Zoom about the book and the film.
- Children can complete p. 24 in Write On this week also. This workbook is for 3rd and 4th class so it should be kept until next year.
Art: Don’t forget about our 3rd and 4th Art competition. The theme is STAYING TOGETHER WHILE KEEPING APART. You can use any media you like- markers, pencils, crayons, paint and paper. The closing date is the 19th of June. Winners will be announced on 22nd of June.
Finally, The Getty Museum in California issued a challenge to bored housebound people everywhere: recreate famous paintings, using just three everyday objects. The results are hilarious. If you want to take a look and send me your own creations, you can look at this page. It is great fun and I would love to see your take on it! You can see how other children in Cork interpreted it here https://www.image.ie/life/cork-school-kids-brilliantly-recreate-famous-artwork-right-at-home-196183

Good morning,
As usual, this week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas. This will be followed by a suggested History topic. You might have seen on Facebook that the book club choice for this month is Billionaire Boy by David Walliams. This book was chosen by Third Class children and should be a good read for this level. Children might also enjoy having this book read to them or listening to an audiobook. We will be having a book club meeting (if possible) when we return to school about this book and Cookie by Jacqueline Wilson, our previous book. Thank you for your emails and your competition entries this week. I am always very happy to hear from you and am still contactable at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie if you would like to get in touch.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan

Dear Parents,
Due to the bank holiday on Monday and the planned school closure on Tuesday, I will give a reduced amount of work this week. As usual I would urge you to find a system that works for your family situation. For some, this might mean stretching the work over four days and sticking to an established routine. Others might wish to take a break from schoolwork on Tuesday as planned.
Irish:
- Pages 138 & 139 in Abair Liom are revision pages. The children can complete A+B on page 138. They can look back in their book or hardback copies for help with the vocabulary and verbs.
- For help to complete C on p. 139 they could take a look at the bottom of p. 180 in Abair Liom.
- D on p. 139 asks them to write about themselves- the clothes they like, a film or tv show they like and a little about the weather in Ireland.
- The ‘seanfhocal’ or saying in E on page 139 means ‘When the cat’s away the mice will play’ and they are asked to draw a picture to show the meaning of this.
Maths:
- We will finish the division chapter this week. Read the top of p. 145 + p.146 carefully and make sure your child understands how to divide one number into another with a remainder left over. Here are links to two videos which explain how to do this.
- Children can complete the written activities on pages 145-147. Below is a link to the resources section of Planet Maths on the Folens website. Sign in and click on Topic, then Division 3 and this will bring you to games that will help the to practise division with remainders.

Good morning,
Here we are in the last week of May, let’s hope for a nice, sunny week ahead. Again, this week I will give the usual suggestions of some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas. This will be followed by a suggested chapter from the religion textbook and an art activity. Thank you for your emails this week. I also had several emails directly from the children and this was especially welcome. Please encourage your child to email me. They do not have to post their work but just to hear how they are doing is nice and the contact might help them to stay motivated for the next few weeks. I will be sure to reply. As you know my email address is c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan
Irish:
- We will finish the theme An Aimsir this week. Continue to encourage the children to use some of the vocabulary for this theme from the vocabulary sheet in their daily lives maybe doing a daily weather report. If you were not able to print this sheet out and stick it in the hardback copy, the children could write some more of the words and phrases in this week.
- They can read the ‘comhrá’ on page 133 of Abair Liom daily. This comhrá is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website (see link below). In school the children like to act out these conversations. Maybe they could try this at home with a family member.
- Children can complete the written activities F on p. 133, G+H on p. 134 and J on p. 135. Children could take a look at the pictures on p. 136 + 137 and say one or two sentences about each one.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail children can move on to Unit 26 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths:
- We will look at some of Topic 24: Division 3 from P.M. p.144. Children can complete the activities on p. 143 + p.144 this week. These activities are based on the division tables. The children will see a new way of writing division sums at the top of p. 144. You will find a nice game to support these activities at the link below. We will finish the chapter next week and focus on dividing with remainders.
https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PM3/resources/activitya/pm_3c_143/index.html
- This week we will move on to ÷3 tables. They can complete the activities on p. 42 and p. 43 of their Table Toppers workbook. Don’t forget that Hit the Button is a good way to learn and practise tables. Start a family tournament!
- We will continue with MYM this week. Children can move on to Week 27. You will find the answers at the link below. Your child can skip the questions involving division with remainders for now.

Religion: As it is the last week of May, children could take a look at p. 76-78 of their Grow in Love textbook. This unit explains Christian Pilgrimages and describes Knock, County Mayo as an Irish place of pilgrimage. If there is a family member or relative who has visited Knock or been to another place of pilgrimage maybe your child could talk to them about it. Can your child identify a Marian shrine in the area? If it is within 5k, maybe you could visit it. Children could say the Hail Mary with their family (p.100) if you wish. The Prayer to Our Lady of Knock is in the resources section of the Grow in Love website. Go to Third Class, Theme 9 Celtic Christianity and click on Christian Pilgrimage. Hello again everyone,
As usual, this week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas. This will be followed by a suggested art activity and a History topic. Thank you for your emails this week. I am always very happy to hear from you and I enjoy seeing the fantastic school-work that is being done as well as the lovely activities you are doing with your families. I am contactable at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie if you would like to get in touch

Irish:
- An Aimsir is our theme again for this week. It would be great if the children could use some of the vocabulary for this theme from the vocabulary sheet in their daily lives maybe doing a daily weather report. If you were not able to print this sheet out and stick it in the hardback copy, the children could write some more of the words and phrases in this week.
- They can read the story on page 130 of Abair Liom daily. This story is talking about the climates in different places and is read aloud in the Folens online resources (see link below). It is tricky but have a go. Use the vocabulary sheet in your hardback copy to help and email me if you need help with translation.
- Children can complete the activities A+B on p. 131. See a picture of suggested answers for A below.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail children can move on to Unit 25 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths:
- Our topic this week is Time. Children can complete a selection of the activities on p. 162- p.166 in Planet Maths. This is a area that children can find tricky. Concrete activities can help with understanding. You could ask your child to look up bus, train and TV timetables for specific information. They could look at expiry dates on food and work out how many days are left or calculate the number of days between 2 people’s birthdays.
- You will find resources to support this chapter on folensonline.ie.
- This week we will revise the division tables that the children have learned so far. They can complete the activities on p. 40 and p. 41 of their Table Toppers workbook.
- We will continue with MYM this week. Children can move on to Week 26. You will find the answers at the link below. If you haven’t already signed up for an account you may need to do so to access this link
https://my.cjfallon.ie/ebooks/23395.pdf

An audio version of the book is available on audible.co.uk for free when you sign up for a free 30 day trial. If you are a library member you could access the book on the Borrowbox app.
- We have met many of the important characters already. This week I would like the children to pick one character they have met so far, draw a picture of them and write a description of them. They could use the template below to help them or use the mind map structure that we learned about earlier this year when we were creating our own characters for a story.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t2-e-808-charlottes-web-fern-character-profile-writing-frame
- We will continue with the phonic sound <le> this week for phonics and spellings. Read the following words. Do you know what they mean? If not, look them up in your dictionary. Write them into your spelling copy. Pick 3 to put into sentences.
- Knuckle 2. Disable 3. Obstacle 4. Formidable 5. Improbable 6. Impossible 7. Rectangle 8. Believable 9. Vehicle
SESE: History- This week you can read about Stories of Artists from Ireland on p. 124- 129 of Unlocking SESE. The term ‘artist’ can mean anyone who practises any of the creative arts. For example, writers, poets, actors, painters, singers and dancers are all types of artist. This chapter talks about Bram Stoker who wrote the book Dracula and Lady Gregory who wrote a number of books about Irish myths and legends. Write three interesting facts you have learned about either of these artists in your hardback copy or research and write about another Irish artist that you might have heard of.
Art: The HSE are reminding us to “hold firm”. This means that we must continue to be brave and strong and to follow the guidelines so we, and others, can stay safe and well.

Maybe you could do some rainbow art using paints, markers, crayons or other media and display your art in your windows to show your support for the frontline workers.

Good morning,
I hope you are all well and in good health and spirits. A big happy birthday to Cillian for Tuesday and to Finn for Sunday. Enjoy the family celebrations. This week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas, an art activity and a Geography topic. I was hoping that we would be back together again before June. I am disappointed that this will not be the case, but the most important thing is that we all stay safe and follow the advice given. It is hard to stay motivated and to keep going with the school work I know but do your best and, if I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie

- They can read the poem on page 129 of Abair Liom daily. This poem is read aloud in the Folens online resources. This poem could be written into their Poems and Songs copy or printed and stuck in if possible.
- Page 127 continues with irregular verbs in the past tense (briathra neamhrialta- Aimsir Chaite). This year we spent a lot of time learning the regular verbs in the past tense (these can be found in the back of the hardback copies or on p. 182 and 183 in Abair Liom). The irregular verbs can be found on p.184 and the children could study these this week. If you can print out this sheet and stick it in the Irish hardback copy, that would be useful. Otherwise, maybe the children could write them into their hardback copies.
- Activity F on p. 128 and J on p. 129 can also be completed.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail children can move on to Unit 24 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths:

- Simple 2. Eagle 3. Beetle 4. Handle 5. Puzzle 6. Angle 7. Jungle 8. Horrible 9. Terrible
SESE: Geography- This week you can read about Poland on p. 136- 141 of Unlocking SESE. Do some extra research about Poland using your atlas. Can you find the names of three cities, three rivers and three mountain ranges in Poland? Write them in your hardback SESE copy. Write three interesting facts you have learned about Poland in your copy too. Click on the link below for a PowerPoint about Poland.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/poland-powerpoint-roi-g-25259
If your subscription does not allow you to access this PowerPoint, email me and I will send it to you.
Art: Last week you learned about clothes and fashion in History. This week, you could get creative with Fabric and Fibre in Art. See if you can find some fabric pieces, wool, ribbon etc. to get started. Maybe you could cut up some old clothes (with permission). Below are some examples of creations by the Third Class children from last year to inspire you!

Dear Parents,
Due to the bank holiday on Monday and the planned school closure on Tuesday, I will give a reduced amount of work this week. As usual I would urge you to find a system that works for your family situation. For some, this might mean stretching the work over five days and sticking to an established routine. Others might wish to take a break from schoolwork on Monday and Tuesday as planned.
Irish:
- We will continue with the theme ‘An Aimsir’ this week. Children should try to give a short weather report to the family each day using the vocabulary sheet from last week. You could ask them: Cén sort aimsir atá ann inniu? (What is the weather like today?).
- They can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on page 125 of Abair Liom. This Comhrá is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website. In school the children like to act out these conversations. Maybe they could try this at home with family members.
- Written activities on p. 125 and 126 can also be completed.
Maths:
- Tables, especially division tables, covered to date can be practised this week (÷10, ÷5, ÷2, ÷4).
- There are some Mental Maths Revision activities on pages 172 and 173 of Planet Maths. These could be completed this week.
English:
- This year we studied Narrative Writing and Recount Writing. The children also created their own pieces of writing from each of these genres. Our next genre is Report Writing. Children can complete p. 66 and p. 90 from Exercise Your English. Children can write a report about our school as suggested on p. 90 B. They can use the school website to research the topic.
- We will continue with the phonic sound <dge> this week for phonics and spellings. Read the following words. Do you know what they mean? If not, look them up in your dictionary. Write them into your spelling copy. Pick 3 to put into sentences.
- Ledge 2. Hedgehog 3. Knowledge 4. Begrudge 5. Porridge
History: We will learn about Clothes in history this week. Read pages 118-123 in Unlocking SESE. Children can pick out three interesting facts that they have learned and write them into their SESE hardback copies. They could draw a picture of a person wearing clothes from a particular era or use some old clothes or pieces of fabric to make clothes for their toys. You will find some extra information, YouTube clips and activities by following the link below.
http://www.helpmykidlearn.ie/activities/8-9/detail/history-of-fashion-and-clothes
Religion: This week the children could take a look at pages 64- 66 in Grow in Love. There is a nice poem on p. 66 that they could read for their family. On page 100 there are two prayers to the Holy Spirit which your family could say together if you wish.
Play: Here is a link to some government resources that promote play. Don’t underestimate the value of play in these difficult times. Time spent playing is time well spent.
“Playing is central to children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing. Children learn through play while developing resilience, flexibility and understanding of their world. Play in families enriches childhood. All children and young people have a right to play.”

Good morning!
I hope you are all well and happy and enjoyed a break from school work over the weekend. As usual, I will post some suggestions for work that can be completed in Irish, English and Maths along with some further suggestions from some of the other subject areas. To those of you who emailed me this week, thank you, it was really nice to hear from you and I enjoyed seeing all of the great work that is happening in your homes. Through this experience we will learn a lot, and I look forward to hearing from the children about how they got on when we return to school. If children are keeping up their daily learning goals, this is a great way of recording all of the wonderful work that they are doing each day. Don’t forget, the family activities, household chores, walks, games, gardening, drawing etc are all important learning activities and can be recorded in your Independent Learning Copy. I can be contacted on c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie if you need any help or advice or if you would like to share any completed work.
Irish:
- We will begin the theme of An Aimsir (The Weather) this week. I will attach a photo of the vocabulary sheet for this theme below, it can also be downloaded from the Folens website. If you have access to a printer this sheet could be stuck into your child’s Irish hardback copy. If not, your child could write some of the useful phrases directly into their hardback copy.
- Children can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on pages 122-124 of Abair Liom, also completing the questions on p. 124. There are resources to help on the Folens website.
Here are the answers to the questions. Children should know the meanings of the question words and look for other words they know within the questions.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on to Unit 23 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths:
- This week we will start Weight. You will find this topic on p. 114 in Planet Maths. Children could begin by finding products at home eg. flour, sugar, coffee that have the amount indicated in grams or kilograms on the packaging. Children could look for weighing scales around the house and identify what they are used to weigh. When adding and subtracting grams and kilograms, remind your child to put the grams under the grams and the kilograms under the kilograms and to give each number its own box in their Maths copy to keep their work neat and clear (there is an example in PM on p.115). Children can complete a selection of the activities from p. 114- p. 118.
- There are three online games for this topic on the folens website.
*RIDDLE: Which is heavier, 1kg of feathers or 1kg of coal?
- If you are doing any baking this week maybe you could include your child and let them help to weigh the ingredients.
- We will start ÷4 tables. Children can use Hit the Button and the activities on p. 37 and p. 38 in their Table Toppers book to learn and practise these.
English:
- The children can move on to Unit 27 in Reading Zone, The Frog Prince and complete the activities on pages 113-114.
- Children could also complete p. 23 in their Write On workbook, writing each sentence twice in their writing copies.
- We will look at the phonic sound <dge> this week for phonics and spellings. Read the following words. Do you know what they mean? If not, look them up in your dictionary. Write them into your spelling copy. Pick 3 to put into sentences.
- Edge 2. Judge 3. Sledge 4. Badge 5. Badger 6. Bridge 7. Gadget 8. Budge 9. Fidget
Science and Music:
- Do you remember we learned about Sound this year in Science? Check out the link below for a Science/ Music lesson from Home School Hub.
- Here is a YouTube video that teaches you how to write your own song!
History
- We were learning about the Normans in History before the school closure. On Tuesday, Home School Hub will be covering this topic. Tune in to RTE 2 at 11am or find this lesson on the RTE player. Your child could write some new facts that they have learned in their SESE hardback copy and draw a picture.

Good morning,
Firstly, I would like to welcome you all back. I hope you had a break over the last fortnight and are ready to get back to some school work. Belated birthday wishes to Rose who had a birthday during the holidays! I’m sure you had a lovely celebration with your family Rose.
This week we will continue with some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas again followed by some suggestions from the other subject areas.
Irish:
- We will finish the theme of An Teilifís this week. Again, the vocabulary for this theme is in the hardback copies, maybe at this stage the children would be able to use some of the phrases without using their copies. They can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on page 117 of Abair Liom. This Comhrá is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website. In school the children like to act out these conversations. Maybe they could try this at home with a partner. Written activities on p. 117 can also be completed. P. 118 deals with the past tense of the irregular verb Téigh (to go). See p.184 of Abair Liom for a sheet which includes the past tense (Aimsir Chaite) of all the irregular verbs. Activities on p. 119 and 120 can also be completed this week.
- In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on to Unit 22 and complete the activities as they normally would
Maths:
- This week we will start Capacity. You will find this topic on p. 157 in Planet Maths. Children could begin by finding products at home eg. milk, juice that have the amount indicated in litres or millilitres on the packaging. If you have a measuring jug at home, the children could explore capacity using these- estimating and filling other containers. When adding and subtracting litres and millilitres, remind your child to put the units under the units, the tens under the tens etc. and to give each number its own box in their Maths copy to keep their work neat and clear.
- https://www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/planet-maths3/resources/ There are two games on the topic in the resources section of the Folens website.
- We will start ÷2 tables. Children can use Hit the Button and the activities on p. 34 and p. 35 in their Table Toppers book to learn and practise these.
English: The children can move on to Unit 26 in Reading Zone and complete the activities on pages 108-109. Maybe they could try out some of the games described in this piece. Children could also complete p. 22 in their Write On workbook, writing each sentence twice in their writing copies.
SESE: If you are enjoying seeing and hearing the birds in your garden or around the outside of your house, here is a link to an article that will help you to identify some garden birds that are commonly found in Ireland. If you like you could send me some photos of the ones that you spot.
Here are the schedules for RTE’s School Hub programme and TG4’s school programme for this week. On Tuesday, TG4 are covering the theme Teilifís, this might be helpful as we are also studying this theme. Although Home School Hub indicate the classes that their lessons are suitable for, I have found them all to be relevant for children in Third Class.
I am contactable at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie should you have any questions or if you and your child would like to share any completed work.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan

Dear Parents,
As we are continuing to follow the school calendar, we will not be posting on the website for the two weeks of the Easter holidays. If you would like to continue with the structure of doing school work daily, we highly recommend RTE Home School Hub. We’ve been watching this week and we all agree that this programme is very educational. It is curriculum based and supported by the Department of Education. We think that the children from 3rd and 4th class would enjoy it. It is on every day at 11am and might give you a break for an hour!
We will be checking our emails from time to time over the fortnight so if you need any help, support or advice during this time feel free to contact us via the email addresses we have already posted. We would like to wish you and your children a very Happy Easter. We sincerely hope that we’ll be back together in the classroom after the holidays but if not, we will be posting on the website again on Monday, 20th of April.
Kind Regards,
C. Flanagan, A. Duggan and N. Tutundjian

Good morning,
Firstly, I would like to wish Donncha a happy birthday for yesterday and Charlotte a happy birthday today! It will be a different way of celebrating this year, but I am sure you will make the most of it.
This week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas again and I have a couple of other ideas from the other subject areas also.
Irish: We will stay with the theme of An Teilifís this week. Again, the vocabulary for this theme is in the hardback copies. Maybe at this stage the children would be able to use some of the phrases without using their copies. They can practise their Irish reading daily using the content on page 114 of Abair Liom, maybe concentrating on one paragraph per day. This story is read aloud in the resources section of the Folens website. Written activities on p. 115 can also be completed. In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on to Unit 21 and complete the activities as they normally would. As the spellings this week are action words, you and your child could play a guessing game, acting out the spellings for each other.
Maths: This week you can revise. I suggest revising tables especially ÷5 and ÷10 using the Hit the Button game. Children can move on to Week 24 in their Master Your Maths workbook. If they are finding certain areas difficult in MYM, you could use the Planet Maths textbook and Folens online resources to go back over these. Please find the answers for MYM below.
English: The children can move on to Unit 25 in Reading Zone and complete the activities on pages 104-105. Children could complete p. 21 in their Write On workbook, also writing each sentence twice in their writing copies.
SESE: If your child is working on their SESE project I would suggest adding a section headed Sources where they can list the websites or books where they found their information and also a section for My Own Ideas where children can write a few lines explaining what they liked or found interesting about their topic, maybe why they chose it or what new or unexpected information they learned. I recommend the Scoilnet website for researching SESE topics. The World Book website is another valuable resource which can be accessed for free through Scoilnet.
Literacy: On Friday I posted the on the school Facebook page on behalf of the Book Club. Some of the fifth-class girls had chosen Cookie by Jacqueline Wilson as our next book. If you are a library member, the book can be downloaded to any device using the BorrowBox app. It can also be purchased from bookdepository.com or easons.com. Alternatively, you could sign up to audible.co.uk for a 30-day free trial and download it for free as an audio book. The book was chosen by some of the girls from 5th class so if you think your child might find it difficult you could read it to them or download it as an audiobook. Reading to your child allows them to concentrate on understanding the story rather than the mechanics of decoding words. It also allows them to access material that they might enjoy but might be a little advanced for their reading ability. I highly recommend reading aloud to your child as often as possible.
Religion: As Easter approaches children could read about Holy Week and Easter in their Grow in Love textbook p. 58-63.
This week RTE is starting a “school on tv” programme. It will be shown each day at 11 on RTE 2. I am going to check it out today as it may be something that we will find useful. Click on the link below for more information.

Good morning,
I hope you are well and in good health and spirits. This week I will suggest some textbook/ workbook-based activities in the core subject areas and an outdoor activity. You can look back at last week’s post for suggestions in the other subject areas and I would again encourage children to continue to set learning goals at the beginning of each day and reflect on their learning in the evening.
Irish: An Teilifís is our theme again for this week. It would be great if the children could use some of the vocabulary from their hardback copies for this theme in their daily lives. They can practise their reading daily using the content on pages 108, 109 and 113 of Abair Liom. Written activities on p. 110, 111 along with H on page 112 and J on page 113 can also be completed. In Fuaimeanna & Focail they can move on to Unit 20 and complete the activities as they normally would.
Maths: We were hoping to teach the topic ‘Area’ during Station Teaching this week.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/cfe-n-150-introduction-to-area-powerpoint
It has come to my attention that this power point is not part of the free content. Please email me if you would like me to send it to you.
This power point presentation would be a good way of introducing the topic and the children can complete activities on pages 138-142 of Planet Maths if you wish. There are some suggestions for concrete activities in the textbook also and you will find two online activities at the following link. See information on how to register for free with Folens below.
https://www.folensonline.ie/home/library/programmes/planet-maths3/resources/
The children can move on to ÷5 tables this week. They can complete the activities on p. 32 and p. 33 of their Table Toppers workbook.
English: The children can move on to Unit 24 in Reading Zone and complete the activities on pages 99-100. Find a link to a power point about adjectives below, this would be a nice way to introduce the written activity E on page 100.
https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t2-e-4332-powerful-adjectives-powerpoint
It has come to my attention that this power point is not part of the free content. Please email me if you would like me to send it to you.
SESE: As we are working on the theme of Biodiversity in Green Schools, I thought I would link to an article about National Tree Week which takes place this week. The article includes tips on how to identify different types of trees and mentions a free app to help with tree identification that is available from the British Wildlife Trust.
The publishers CJ Fallon and Folens are offering access to their resources for free during the school closure so if your child was absent or went home early when the closure was announced you can access all the books and workbooks online. For Folens, go to Folensonline.ie and click register. Select teacher. Fill in a user name, email and password. For roll number enter prim20. I would also like to remind you again that the above are suggestions and it is up to you to find a way of learning that works for your family situation. I would encourage you to have a look at the pages of the other teachers, including SEN teachers, as there are some lovely ideas and resources there too that might suit your child. I am contactable at c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie should you have any questions or if you want to share your child’s work. Please pass on my best wishes to your children. Tell them their teacher is missing them and I look forward to seeing them soon.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan
Dear Parents,
Good morning and I hope everyone is keeping well. I hope your children are coping in this strange situation and that they are ready for some school related activities!
Here at Scoil Naomh Micheál we believe that learning is a social pursuit best achieved when people are engaging with each other and working and playing together. As this will not be possible in a school setting in the coming weeks, we are encouraging the children to think about how they can learn independently or with their families.
I suggest that each child starts a new copy for this time. They could call it their Independent Learning Copy. We have been talking a lot about Learning Goals and Learning Strategies this year. If possible, each day your child should set some learning goals and record them in the copy. These goals might include some of the textbook/ workbook work that I have suggested or other activities as in the example below.
EXAMPLE
19/3 Learning Goals: · Complete page 138 of Master Your Maths · Help my parents to cook the dinner · Speak Irish while I am having my breakfast · Write a story |
Your child can also write a short reflection each day to look back on their goals and learning. I am mindful of the challenges that may occur for families in the coming weeks and do not want to cause any extra stress or pressures for you and your children. I would hope that children could engage in this process independently for the most part.
I also ask you to appreciate that many of the activities that children engage in at home are highly beneficial for their learning. Playing with Lego and other construction toys, playing outside, practicing their sports, pretend play, board games, reading, painting, drawing, playdoh, helping with household chores, practicing musical instruments are all educational and worthwhile activities.
I will be suggesting work that the children can complete from their schoolbooks below. Please understand that these are just suggestions- it is important that you choose an approach that works for your family. You can contact me on c.flanagan@upperglanmirens.ie during the school closure if you have any questions or if you would like to share pictures of the work your child has done.
I hope that the coming weeks go as smoothly as possible and look forward to a happy and healthy return to school soon.
Kind Regards,
Caitlín Flanagan
Suggested school work and activities
Gaeilge
- Our planned theme for the next few weeks is An teilifís. Written activities can be found in Abair Liom l. 106-121. Vocabulary for oral work can be found in the Irish hardback copy. The Seachtain na Gaeilge resources that Mr. O’Connell forwarded to you can also be used and explored.
English
- Reading their own books at home would be very beneficial and children could keep a record of the books they have read and what they thought of them in their copy if they wish.
- Today and tomorrow children could read p. 64 in Exercise Your English and complete B on p.65.
- If you are a library member and have a digital device, BorrowBox is an app that allows you to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your library for free.
- I know a number of children in the class like to write stories or make books. This should be encouraged. Spelling or grammar are not priorities here.
Maths
- The plan is to continue with ÷ tables. Children may have a look at the upcoming tables in their tables books if they wish but I would suggest that they use this time to revise and improve their speed and accuracy. They love the Hit the Button game which can be found online or downloaded as an app.
- We were doing Maths Stations this month. Children can continue with 3D shapes this week and complete P.M. p.154 A 1+2. There are some useful resources available on twinkl.ie (login info below).
- Due to the Station Teaching, children have been doing sections of their Master Your Maths books independently. Children can complete up to Week 23, including the tests if they wish and if not already completed.
- My plan was to revise Time with the children in small groups in Station Teaching. Several of the children have found this difficult. See Planet Maths p.18- 22 for guidance but referring to analogue and digital clocks at home would be very helpful.
Religion
- Children are welcome to read ahead in their Grow in Love textbook or look back over previous chapters and I would encourage daily prayer and/ or religious stories if this is something that suits your family.
SESE (Geography, History, Science)
- Usually in May I assign a project in this area, this might be a suitable task for children to do while home from school. Children can complete a project in any of the three subject areas on a topic of their own choosing. They can look through Unlocking SESE for ideas but are not restricted to these topics. These projects can be researched and presented in any way that works for you.
PE/ Drama/ Art/ Music/SPHE
- Play, play and more play! This is a good opportunity for children to have time for free, unstructured play. Play can incorporate outside activities such as ball games, chasing games, trampolines. It can also involve dressing up and playing imaginative games. In school the children love getting an idea or theme and coming up with a drama based on this. Creative play such as drawing, painting, junk art is also very worthwhile. With structured activities cancelled in a lot of cases, make the most of this opportunity for more free play.
- gonoodle.com is a great, free resource for indoor physical activity. We use it on rainy days in school so the children are familiar with it. It is easy and free to create an account.
- If you search for Cosmic Yoga on YouTube you will find yoga and meditation videos of varying lengths that the children are familiar with.
- The Just Dance videos on You Tube are guided dance videos that the children enjoy.
Twinkl.ie is a useful resource. They are offering free membership for parents and teachers during this time and their content covers all curricular areas. Go to http://www.twinkl.ie/offer and enter the code IRLTWINKLHELPS
Again, I would like to stress that it is hoped that the above suggestions are helpful and do not put further stress on you and your family. As the primary educator of your child it is important that you choose a system that works for you over the coming days.
