Ms. N. O’Callaghan 19/20

22/06/2020

Dear parents and children,

It’s hard to believe that it is the final week of school! Well done to all of you for the work that you have completed since we were last together in March and a huge well done to all parents for the work that you have done!

This week there will be a variety of virtual sports activities on the website for you to enjoy! Today was due to be the date of the annual 5k so try to get out for a walk or run if you can. Keep an eye out for some familiar faces on the school website during the week!

To all the boys and girls in 6th class, I wish you all the best as you begin a new and exciting chapter in secondary school!

Lastly, I hope you all have a fantastic, fun-filled and safe summer!

Best wishes,

Ms O’Callaghan.

Good morning parents and children.

I hope that you have been enjoying the lovely weather and have been able to get out and about!

This week I have uploaded two simple games.

As always, have a look at the other SEN pages for ideas and activities.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I can be contacted at n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie.

Have a great week and stay safe,

Ms O’Callaghan.

Game 1:

This game is very straightforward. All you need is a sheet of paper and a timer. Someone in the group picks 6 or 7 random letters and writes them down on a sheet so everyone can see. The timer starts and whoever’s playing has a minute to come up with as many words as they can using the letters. You can’t use the same letter twice and if the word that you think of is missing a letter that’s not on the sheet you can’t use that word.

You can change the amount of letters to make it harder or easier and you can also change the amount of time given. The person with the most words is the winner.

Here is an example of some jumbled up letters that you could use to start off the first game.

b h e s a m r

Game 2: Stop the Bus

Most of you know how to play this game and it is a great way to get the minds working! There are a few variations of this game but it is very straightforward. All you need is a sheet of paper with your titles written across the top.

One of the players says the alphabet to themselves and another player says stop when they want. The first player must call out the letter they stopped on and the game begins. The first player to fill in something for each title says ‘Stop the Bus’ and must call out what they got. You can keep playing as many rounds as you like.

Here is an example of what your sheet might look like.

Good morning parents and children.

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and are looking forward to a bit of normality returning this week as we enter phase 2.

This week I will be uploading a simple maths activity  and a ‘staying calm booklet’.

As always, have a look at the other SEN pages for ideas and activities.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to show me any work that you have completed! I can be contacted at n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie.

Have a great week and stay safe,

Ms O’Callaghan.

Post-it maths activity:

This is a simple activity that can be easily adapted and done with all age groups.

All you need is a blank sheet and a few post-its or small pieces of paper with a bit of tape or bluetac on them. The answers are randomly written on the white sheet and the post-its have the sum written on them. It could also be done the other way around. Children simply pick up the post it and stick it over the answer.

For the younger classes you could revise some of their addition and subtraction tables or else a mixture of both.

For the older classes you could revise multiplication and division tables.

Staying Calm Booklet:

This booklet can be made into a personal staying calm booklet that a child can look at for ideas that they have decided on which can help them stay calm when they feel angry or anxious for example.

It gives some nice ideas that children can pick from that they would like to try and it also discusses making good choices.

Instead of printing it off, children could make a similar booklet themselves!

Dear parents and children,

I hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the nice weather. I also hope you’re all keeping safe and continuing to follow the guidelines. As Dr Tony Holohan said “all good teams keep going until the very end…let’s keep the effort up until the final whistle blows”.

This week I am continuing with a final round of some listening and memory activities. I have also included some division wheels for the maths activity, and I have added some new mindfulness colouring.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to show me any work that you have completed! I can be contacted at n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie.

Have a great week and stay safe,

Ms O’Callaghan.

Listening and memory activities

Activity 1 -The Pizza Memory Game

This pizza memory game is a fun way to test your listening and memory skills! You can adapt it to play a few different games. One person can call out what they want on their pizza while the other person tries to memorise it. Once the first person has called out their list, they can say go and the person listening must put all the ingredients on the pizza. The first person can check to see if it is right and then swap around!

T-S-1215-Pizza-Memory-Game

Activity 2 – Listen and repeat cards

These cards are a great way to support auditory memory skills. Someone calls out the full list and the person listening must repeat the full list in the correct order. They start off easy and get tricky!

t-s-1230-listen-and-repeat-auditory-memory-cards-_ver_3

Maths activity – Division Wheels

This week I have included some division wheels to test your tables. Like last week you could pick one or two division tables a day and you could also complete a daily 10 challenge based on whatever tables you did. The link for the daily 10 challenge is below!

The main activity I have included is a Covid19 time capsule for children. It would be a lovely idea to fill it in, design it and keep it safe to look back at it in years to come! You can find it through this link below.

https://www.cuh.ie/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/COVID-19-Time-Capsule-for-Children-April-2020.pdf

These ‘name 5 things challenge cards’ are also a nice activity and get the brains thinking! They could be used as a warm-up before you start some work or during work as a little break. Children can pick a card at random and can write down 5 things or call them out.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are keeping well. This week the SEN teachers decided to do an Easter theme. We chose different Easter crafts, activities and fun ideas. Please look at all the SEN pages so that you can choose from loads of various ideas. We hope you enjoy them!

Following on from last week I have put some links below for some mindfulness activities such as, Easter themed mindfulness colouring activities, Easter themed yoga and some recipes for some Easter baking! I have also included some nice creative writing ideas for all!

Easter themed mindfulness colouring:

t-or-1324-the-easter-journal-easter-mindfulness-colouring-pages

t-26544-easter-egg-mindfulness-colouring-pages-_ver_2

t-re-299-mindfulness-colouring-easter-cards

t-or-1137-the-easter-journal-stainedglass-window-colouring-pages

Easter themed yoga:

Easter themed baking and cooking ideas:

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easter-kids

Creative writing Easter ideas:

  • Write your own Easter themed story or poem.
  • Choose from some of these story starters and write your own stories:

1. I couldn’t believe my eyes. My Easter basket was filled with…
2. Easter morning, I looked out my window and…
3. Crack, crack, crack… suddenly one of my Easter eggs started to move!
4. Oh no! The Easter bunny broke his leg.
5. These weren’t ordinary jelly beans. These jelly beans…
6. This year I’m going to catch that Easter bunny.
7. I can’t believe it. The Easter bunny….
8. Suddenly the Easter eggs started to talk!

  • For older writers, try Round Robin Writing:
    1. Choose a story starter.
    2. Start writing for 5-10 minutes.
    3. Stop and then pass your paper to the person on your left.
    4. The next person reads over what the last person wrote. Next, continue the story.
    5. Write for 5 minutes and then stop. Pass it to the next person.
    6. This process continues until the original writer gets their paper back.
    7. You’ve now created multiple group stories!
    8. Share and giggle at your creations.

Dear parents and children.

I hope you are all keeping safe and well during this time. I have included some mindfulness activities which could be used as a break from some school work or at any stage throughout the day. I have also included some social stories which may be useful to go through with your child if you feel they may benefit from them. The first one is a nice story for children that may be worried about Coronavirus. Some of these links need to be accessed through http://www.twinkl.ie which can be accessed for free with the use of this code: IRLTWINKLHELPS.

As always if you need help with anything don’t hesitate to email me at n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie.

Enjoy,

Ms O’Callaghan.

Ms O’Callaghan.

Word searches

A simple and nice activity for children to do would be to make a word search using their spellings or their own words and get someone in the house to complete it. This could also be done for the children and is a great way to engage with their spellings.

This is a useful website for creating your own word search:

https://www.abcya.com/games/make_a_word_search

There are loads of websites with free ready to use word searches such as:

Word games and spelling apps

There are also loads of apps which are great for assisting children with spellings whilst having some fun!

For younger children:
