Discussion

The wind can be soft, gentle and refreshing. But it can also be stormy and dangerous. Can you think of a time when you experienced both (cooling wind on a hot day/windy conditions).

Does the wind effect…

  • What clothes we wear?
  • What games or sports we play?
  • Who is unable to work? Eg fishermen, ferry drivers?
  • Who might have to work? RNLI, search & rescue, fire brigade?
  • Travel? Eg Pedestrians, cyclists, heavy vehicles. Air travel. Roads blocked by fallen trees.

Unlocking SESE p71 – Have a look at the photos. Decide which pictures show the wind being helpful and unhelpful. Write the appropriate word under each picture. Draw a picture of a windy day.

Look at the 2 fact sheets below. They tell us all about windmills and what they were used for. Read through both fact sheets and answer the questions in your workbook.

Unlocking SESE p70

In case you can’t view the fact sheets, the text is below.

Windmills – Windmills were used long ago before there was electricity, to catch the power of the wind. They were built and used all over the world. Windmills usually had four or five sails and were placed in a windy location like the top of a hill. The top part of the windmill could be moved to suit whatever direction the wind was coming from. Windmills were used to mill corn, like wheat, oats and barley. Milling or grinding the corn made it easier for animals to eat. wheat was milled very finely until it became flour. Then this was used to make bread and cakes. The sails (outside the windmill) were connected to the grinding stones (inside the mill) by a shaft of wood. When the wind blew the sails, the shaft turned and then the grinding stones turned as well and milled corn. The person who worked the mill was known as a miller. The miller carried the bags of corn upstairs to the top of the mill and poured the corn into the grinding stones to be milled. As it was milled, it fell down into bags below. Windmills were used for hundreds of years. At one time there were over 100 windmills in Ireland. Now there are only a few, and most of these are tourist attractions, not working mills.

Wind Turbines – Today, we have wind turbines. They make, or generate electricity. The wind turns the blades and they are connected to motors which make electricity for our homes and factories.

Dear Parents and Children,

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed the break. It is with great disappointment that we are unable to return to school but I hope that we can return to the classroom as soon as possible.

This is where you will find activities that can be completed by the children over the coming few weeks. There will be a focus on activities in Maths, English and Irish. School work will be uploaded each morning by 9.30am.

I understand the next few weeks will be quite challenging. If there is anything I can help you with, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can contact me at a.otoole@upperglanmirens.ie should you have any questions or need any further support. You can also send any schoolwork to be corrected to that address.

The support teacher working with our class is Ms O’Callaghan. She will be working alongside me and may contact you over the next few weeks (her email address is n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie).

On Friday, you collected the books needed over the next few weeks. There is a blank sums copy and blank lined copy book. The lined copy is to be used for any copy book work – Spellings, writing or Irish activities. If possible, please title each entry with the date and either subject or book with page number. Encourage neat and proper handwriting so I can read and correct children’s work.

Finally, I would like to send Cathal and Séamus happy birthday wishes as they celebrated birthdays earlier this month. I hope you both had a great day!

I hope you and your family keep safe and well,

Kind Regards,

Ms O‘Toole

Planet Maths: pg 55 ‘Near Doubles’ (see first video)

Master Your Maths: P37 Week 16 Wednesday (extra help is available on the link above). We will jump around to catch up on certain pages for this week so keep an eye on the page numbers!

Tables: +11

Table Toppers: +11 Day 1

English

Spellings: rub, tub, run, nun

Spellbound Unit 14, p30 A+B

In your copy, write a sentence for each spelling word, 4 sentences total.

Jolly Phonics spelling: Our focus this week is on <ff> which the children will tell you, is a double trouble! A double trouble is a word with two of the same letters standing side by side eg ball, dress, Ms O’Toole! Over the next week, make a list of all words containing ff. I’ll start you off!

Hint: you won’t find any words that start with ff, they will be in the middle or at the end. Please monitor for correct spelling – initially ask child to sound out their suggested words but correct any incorrect sounds as the focus is to develop correct spelling.

Oral Language:

Reading:

  • Discuss focus words: anew, through, invisible, waterfalls, elastic, shrink, liquid, aliens, galore, distant, dinosaur, wondrous (see video)
  • Core Reader ‘Hooray! Hooray! It’s New Year’s Day!’ pg 60
  • Reading for fun 10-15 minutes of a book of their choice. If you find yourself without many appropriate books for them to read, there is an app called Epic! (which I believe has a 1 month free trial. Be warned it is a subscription service after this). It is a digital library for kids with access to ebooks, audiobooks, learning videos and quizzes. I would love to hear if you enjoy anything on the app, so I can recommend to others to enjoy! But there is no obligation to use, this is simply a suggestion.

Writing:

  • Skills Book pg 64
