Today is the last day of school! Well done to all the children in 1st class. You were all amazing! Hope you all have a great Summer!
Take care,
Ms Carney
Dear parents and children,
As this is our last posting before the summer, I have left you a little voice note to say goodbye until we see each other again after the holidays.
We have reached the final week of school! Let me start by saying how proud I am of all of you for the extraordinary effort you have made over the last three and a half months. A huge thank you to parents who doubled as parents and teachers during this time. It can’t have been easy, but we really appreciate all of your hard work.
It has been amazing keeping in touch with you all during this time. Your emails and pictures have been superb and it has been great to see how busy you all were at home.
The Summer holidays will begin this Friday. I’d encourage you all to keep reading books, keep as active as you have and stay safe on roads, farms and near water.
This week, we have a variety of fun activities for you to enjoy. We will go on Upper Glanmire National School’s first ever Virtual School tour. We will get to hear the last two chapters of Stanley. I hope you are enjoying it so far! Lastly, we will be having a School Sports week with different activities every day for you to at home with your families. Watch out for some familiar faces in the videos!!!!
On Monday the 22nd of June, the school will be open from 10am-12pm for return of book rental books, but I collected all of those before the children left so they have nothing to return. I have the children’s scrapbooks and copies kept safely and will return them on the first day back to school, or if you would prefer to collect them on Monday you can email me to make an appointment and I will let them outside the school for collection. Please adhere to the safety advice from Mr O’Connell with regard to visiting the school premises. You can send me an email to organise a time on h.carney@upperglanmirens.ie .
I would like to wish Lauren and Henry Proos a very happy birthday for this Monday. I hope you have a great day and lots of cake!
Finally I would like to send some happy birthday wishes to Abbie, Maggie, Rosie and Shane for their July birthdays and to Olivia, Clara , Oscar, Ruby and David for their birthdays in August. Enjoy the celebrations and have a lovely day.
I hope you all have a fantastic, sunny, fun-filled Summer. I look forward to seeing you all in September,
Best wishes,
Ms. Carney
Monday
Monday – Running
Today was due to be the date of our annual 5K race so today try to get out there for a walk/run and share your experience on the school’s Facebook page and by e-mail to me! If you’re going to be running in your garden you could try some WACKY LAPS to make you laps more fun and interesting. Run every lap a different way, you could run the first lap to music, the second lap backwards, the third as slowly as possible, the fourth moving your hands in a funny way and so on.
School Tour Day 1
It’s very important that we don’t forget anything for our virtual school tour. Use the checklist below and gather everything together for tomorrow!
It’s going to be a very long journey to America on a plane. Make a list of songs we can sing on the plane! The poor teachers will have awful headaches with the singing!!!
When we get there, keep an eye out for the picture below. When you spot it, it will be time for an exercise challenge!
When you spot this image, it’ll be Joke time!
See you all tomorrow when we will begin our virtual school tour!!!
Flat Stanley
This week we have two chapters to listen to, one read by me and the other by Ms. Carney.

School Tour Day 2
Let’s get started!
Welcome to the Aquarium of the Pacific! Here is a map of the Aquarium. There are lots of different parts, we won’t get around to all of them today but you can go back and visit again with your family. You can also download a map to your device if you wish by clicking here:
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/visit/app/aquarium_visitor_guide_mobile_app
See if you can find the following places we will be visiting on the map:
- Penguin Habitat
- Shark Lagoon
- Moon Jelly Touch Lab
- Tropical Reef
- Honda Blue Cavern
Before we start our journey around the aquarium. Did you ever wonder…what makes a fish a fish?
Listen to Captain Joe and Scuba Shara tell you all about how fish swim and breathe underwater and how a scuba diver swims through the ocean
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/teachers/webcamkits/fish_for_a_day
All this talk about fish and diving has made me want to go swimming in my garden. Pretend to swim around your garden for 1 minute. Use different strokes and see how fast you can go!
We have a very busy day tomorrow. Get a good sleep tonight and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
Flat Stanley
You can enjoy listening to the two new chapters of Flat Stanley again today.
- I think it rather be flattened….how about you?! Have a look at ‘Would You Rather,,,’
Maybe make up some ‘Would You Rather..’ questions for your family or email them to me to answer 😊
Wednesday
School Tour Day 3: Get out your map and see where we are off to!
Stop 1: The Penguin Habitat
At the edge of the rocky beach, penguins hop in and out of the water. Watch as they swim and float on the surface.

Instead of walking to Stop 2, why not jumping jack your way! Keep going for one minute and we’ll be ready to see some sharks!
Stop 2: Shark Lagoon

A great white shark swimming with a slight smile on its face just below the surface. The environment is the deep blue ocean. The shark looks to be in hunting mode.
Live viewing of sharks:

Tour guide lesson on sharks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=E8HJv XWnIR4&feature=emb_logo
I think its time for you to sing or play the song ‘Baby Shark’ at home and dance around the kitchen with the actions! Next we’re off to see some very cool jellyfish!
I’m exhausted after those 2 stops. Time for some food and a drink from your lunchbox! See you all tomorrow!
Flat Stanley
Create a passport for Stanley and take him with you wherever your go. You could stamp it or draw or write where he goes so over the summer even if it’s to the park or the supermarket!
You could keep a journal about where he goes like the one below.
Enjoy a word search, see if you can beat your friend and time yourself!
Thursday: School Tour Day 4
Time to get moving again. Check your map. We’re off to see Moon Jellies (not edible!!!) and a Tropical Reef. Exciting!!!!
Stop 3: Moon Jellies
Live viewing of Moon Jellies
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/exhibits/webcams/webcam_moon_jellies
Tour guide lesson on moon jellies and other ocean drifters:
To get to the next stop, your teacher has put a spell on your legs and they are like jelly. See can you walk for one minute with your jelly legs and get us to the next stop!
Stop 4: The Tropical Reef
The Tropical Reef Habitat is the Aquarium’s largest exhibit, containing 350,000 gallons of water and over 1,000 animals!
Live viewing of the tropical reef:
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/exhibits/webcams/webcam_tropical_reef
Tour guide lesson on the reef and other ocean habitats
That was amazing. Time for big lunch and a few games outside! See you all tomorrow for our final day!
Friday-Our last day of school!!!!
School Tour Day 5
One more fantastic place to see in the Aquarium! Get your map and we’re ready
to go!
Stop 5: Honda Blue Cavern
This shows an example of a Kelp Forest. Kelp forests are undereater forests that provide food and shelter to lots of sea creatures.
Live viewing of the Honda Blue Cavern:
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/exhibits/webcams/webcam_blue_cavern
Visiting the Honda Blue Cavern reminds me of the game ‘Blinds Man Buff’. Ask your parents how to play the game and have fun!!!
It’s time for you to tell us a joke! If you come up with one, send it on!!!
Thanks for visiting the aquarium. I hope you enjoyed your virtual school tour! Have a super Summer and take care!

Dear Parents and Children,
I hope everyone is doing well and keeping safe and I hope you all enjoyed the fabulous weather last week. It’s the first week of June so this week we are going to start a class novel as we would in school for anyone who would like to take part. We will to provide a link to a pdf of the Flat Stanley novel if the children would like to read it themselves or with their parents or alternatively there is a link to the text being read by myself, Ms. Brady or Ms. O’Shea each week if the children would like to read along and listen to the chapter being read by us. It’s a fun novel and we’ll add in some fun activities to do along with it as we get into it each week. We hope to do a chapter per week, it’s nice and short and it’ll give us a few giggles!
Thank you all again for your hard work, emails, pictures and more. It’s been so great to see how everyone is getting on at home. I hope you all have a great week and I’m here at h.carney@upperglanmirens.ie if I can help with anything. There are videos again this week to help with the activities. As it is a Bank Holiday the activities are organised under subjects rather than days so you can pick and choose what to do on the days that suit you.
Also, I’d like to wish a big summer happy birthday to Daniel Fitzgerald who turns 8 this week. Have a great day Daniel, hope the sun shines for you!

It looks like everyone is busy doing lots of different things which is great to see. This week there are some videos as always to help with maths and Irish activities if you need them and please email me at h.carney@upperglanmirens.ie if I can help with anything else. 11th-15th May
Dear Parents and Children,
I hope you are all keeping well. Last week was a pretty wet one so here’s hoping the sun will shine this week for us all! Again, I would like to thank you all for your correspondence and for keeping in touch. It’s great to see that the children are doing so well at home and getting through a little bit of work each day. I was delighted to get some pictures of stories, delicious looking treats that the children have made at home, emails about books they have been reading, what they thought of the characters and lots more. This week there are videos again to help you with maths and Irish and please email me at h.carney@upperglanmirens.ie if there is anything else that I can do to help. There is a lot of work posted here each week. As always there is no obligation to complete everything, the suggested extra activities are to cater for all the different interests and talents that the children have so please don’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of work you see. The extra games and activities in addition to bookwork are only to provide you with more visual or fun ways to work with your child if they need it. Everyone learns differently. Everyone is doing their best and that’s all we can do in a time like this! The closing date for our Summer Poetry competition if you’d like to enter is the 18th of May. I look forward to seeing more Summer poems this week.
I like to wish Sam a very happy birthday for this Monday, the 11th. Hope you have great day!
Have a great week everyone and well done on all the great work.
