Ideas you could try before the activity:
Show them how kilos and grams are written on food packages and in recipes. Kilos/kilograms are usually written as “kg” and grams are shortened to “g”.
At home, get out the kitchen scales and show them how to weigh different items that you find around the house. Experiment with different food items – tins, packets of sugar, fruit and vegetables.
Notice how size is not always an indication of weight. Some items are very light, even though they take up a lot of space. If you have bathroom scales, discover what weight your child is in kilos.
Get a few items and put them in order starting from lightest to heaviest. Make some sentences such as ‘The beans are lighter than the sugar’.
See if you can find anything close to ¼ kg or 250g, ½ kg or 500g and 1kg or 1000g.

SESE:
Over the next three weeks, we will be learning about space, the planets and space travel. For this week, I want you to design the rocket that you plan to go to space in and make a list of ten things you are going to take with you.
When you are designing your rocket, remember to include the following things:
Nose – The tip at the top of the rocket
Exhaust flames- These are at the bottom of the rocket and help when it is about to launch.
A window
Tube of the Rocket- Centre/Main part of the rocket
Fins-A rocket needs fins on the left and right side. Fins stop the rocket from wobbling left and right in the sky. (These are red on the picture below)
Next, make a list of what you would bring with you. The rocket is already stocked with food and water! You could write them in your homework or busy bee copy.

Dear Parents and Children,
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed the break. It is with great disappointment that we are unable to return to school but I hope that the numbers will reduce in the next three weeks and we can return to school as soon as possible.
Below are activities for today, Monday the 11th. There will be a focus on activities in Maths, English and Irish. The children are used to completing these activities at school. Throughout the week, there will be videos posted to help children at home. Work will be completed in workbooks as well as in their copies. School work will be uploaded each morning by 9.30am.
I understand the next few weeks will be quite challenging. If there is anything I can help you with, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can contact me at e.forde@upperglanmirens.ie should you have any questions or need any further support. You can also send any schoolwork to be corrected to that address.
The support teacher working with our class is Ms O’Callaghan. She will be working alongside me and may contact you over the next few weeks. Her email address is n.ocallaghan@upperglanmirens.ie .
I would like to wish Elliot a very happy birthday today. I hope you have a great day!
We had great news here at home last Wednesday when our first calf of the new year arrived. I’ll keep you posted if there are any more twins or triplets in the coming weeks!
I hope you and your family keep safe,
Kind Regards,
Ms Forde
