Money Matters – 7th Sept

Money Matters

Dear Parents/Guardians,

You may be aware of the cutbacks that have affected all school funding in recent years. Successive Boards of Management of Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Micheál have been very active in trying to secure grants for a range of renovations and improvements. In recent years we have been successful in securing funds for the following:

  • New zoned heating system
  • School extension
  • Complete electricity and lighting upgrade
  • Roof and cavity wall insulation
  • Parking set-down area
  • Sewage system
  • School furniture

This summer a number of projects took place in the school, requiring the prudent use of annual funding:

  • Painting of classrooms
  • Painting of school doors
  • Painting of exterior of school building
  • Replacement of interior school door
  • Refurbishment of toilets
  • Replacement of classroom carpets

The Board of Management and staff of Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Micheál have always striven to provide the very best in terms of resources and materials for teaching and learning. We greatly appreciate the contributions of individual parents and The Parents’ Association to assist with the acquisition of these.

Cutbacks

Official school funding has been considerably reduced in recent years. Capitation grants have been reduced, while last year we were fortunate to receive a Minor Works grant. This Minor Works grant is on a year to year basis and is not guaranteed. Grants for the purchase and maintenance of IT equipment have not been paid in several years, and money for this needs to be taken from the Minor Works grant. This is an area of vital importance for the children in our school.

Voluntary Contribution

The school has decided to request a voluntary contribution for the 2015/2016 school year. We are very aware of the financial challenges that many families are experiencing at this time, therefore there is no increase in the amount requested. The contribution may be paid in the first term or split between the first and second term.

Le meas,

Patrick O’Connell
